K. I Sawyer AFB (Air Force Base) was a United States Air Force installation located in Marquette County, Michigan. The base was named after Kenneth Ingalls Sawyer, a Michigan born Air Force pilot who was killed during World War II. The base was opened in 1955 and closed in 1995 due to budget cuts. It was the largest military installation in Michigan, spanning over 20,000 acres and featuring two runways, numerous aircraft hangars, housing for personnel and their families, and a large industrial complex. During its operational years, K.I. Sawyer AFB played a key role in both the Cold War and the Persian Gulf War. Today, the former base is home to Sawyer International Airport and various industrial and commercial enterprises.
